Unit 5: Family Life Education and Quality of Life
       What do you mean by bases of quality of life?
       What are the bases of quality life?
       What do you mean by HDI?
       What do you mean by PCI?
       What do you mean by PQLI?

Lesson 2: Bases of Quality of Life
       Bases of Quality of life refer to the quantitative measurement of emotional well being and life evaluation in financial terms.
       There are so many dissimilarities among the concepts of quality of life. But
       Some bases have been illustrated to measure the quality of life:
  1. Basic Needs.
  2. Physical Quality of Life Index.
  3. Human Development Index.
1. Basic Needs:
       Quality life can be determined on the basis of fulfillment of goods and services which are most essential for survival.
       Since 1990 A.D., the fulfillment of basic needs has been considering as an index of economic development.
       Due to economic development, social and economic status of people increases.
       Due to which, fulfillment of basic needs can be achieved and the quality of life is attained.
       In Nepal, 6th five year plan (2037-2042) first time aimed to fulfill basic needs.
       Following needs must be fulfilled among basic needs:
       Food, clothing, shelter, health, education, safe drinking water, security, proper counseling for sexual behavior.


2. Physical Quality of Life Index:
       For quality of life, PQLI doesn’t only refer to the economic development but also the health and educational services provided to the citizens by nation.

       Followings are the bases of measurement of PQLI:
  1. Child mortality under 5 years.
  2. Average life
  3. Literacy rate
       0-100 number is considered as the base of measurement of PQLI.
       The country having high score considered as having higher quality of life and that of lower score as lower standard of life.
       Now a days it has been considered as Human Development Index(HDI)
3. Human Development Index (HDI):

       Nobel laureate Amartya Sen utilized Haq's work in his own work on human capabilities.                            (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index)
       It is statistical tool to measure the country’s overall achievement.
       Every year UNDP publishes HDI report since 1990.
       It ranks the countries of the world on the basis of following criteria:
  1. Average life
  2. Education
  3. Income
