Lesson 1: Quality of Life and Its Components
       Quality of life is the attaining a higher level of satisfaction, happiness and fulfillment of all basic and extra needs.
       The components or elements of quality life refer to the nutrition, food, sanitation, income, education, security, social and religious beliefs etc.
Human Needs
       Human Needs are Classified as:
       Basic Needs : Food, Shelter, Clothes, air, water
       Socio Cultural Needs: Respect, Prestige, Security, Co-existence, cooperation, love
       Mental and psychological needs: Education, Responsibility, health services, employment, job opportunities, transportation, communication, human rights
       Spiritual Needs: Freedom of thought, Affiliation and faith, Social existence, Religious norms and values

Introduction to Quality of Life
       Quality of life is a multidimensional concept and process.
       To attain a quality of life a person has to attain a good level of satisfaction along with the fulfillment of all needs.
       It varies on the basis of time, place and situation.
       The quality of life is defined on the basis of various aspects like : social, personal, educational, economic, psychological, emotional etc.
       So, the quality of life is degree of happiness and satisfaction in terms of these aspects of life.
       Therefore, quality of life is the fulfillment of all basic as well as all additional needs for satisfaction and survival.
Need and Importance of Quality of Life
       To make a successful and satisfied family life, a quality of life is the most important factor.
       Quality of life indicates the standard of life.
       It reflects the overall status of a nation and category of citizens like higher, middle and lower class.
       In ancient society, there was no any well developed situation of human being.
       Needs were limited and no any priority would be given to the quality of life.
       But in the present situation, it is the age of competition and development. So quality of life is on priority of an individual’s, family, society and a nation.
       To summarize: Quality of life is the higher standard of life of people with the fulfillment of needs with comparison to the others.
The needs and importance of quality of life are as follows:
  1. Fulfillment of basic needs
  2. Attainment of quality education
  3. Management of health services, facilities and sanitation
  4. Facilities for maternal and child care
  5. Feeling of co-existence
  6. Opportunity for income generation
  1. Fulfillment of basic Needs:
       The needs which are must for the survival of human beings like food, shelter, clothes.
       For the attainment of quality of life, basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing etc. must be fulfilled.
       If these needs are fulfilled easily and affordably, then satisfaction, happiness of a family is increased.
2.      Attainment of Quality Education:
       There must be an opportunity of easily getting quality education according to our needs and interest.
       Quality education supports to fulfill family needs, to become a successful person and income generation during this competitive age.
       This helps economic development of a family and to attain the higher level of peace and satisfaction.
3.      Management of Health Services, Facilities and Sanitation:
       There must be easily access to the most emergency health services and facilities to each family member.
       Sanitation must be well managed of a community, inside and outside of the home.
       Due to neat and clean environment and availability of health facilities, all members of a family become healthy and get quality of life.
  1. Facilities of Maternal and Child Welfare:
       The intensive care must be done during pregnancy, lactating mother and growing children up-to 5yeras.
       Cleaning related to nutrition, health check up, immunization, sanitation must be provided.
       To attain a quality of these above mentioned must be provided.
       It is impossible to provide such facilities with low quality family life.

       There must be an opportunity of easily getting quality education, skill development and  trainings according to our needs and interest to all family members.

Elements of Quality of Life
       To get quality of life there must fulfillment of basic needs like nutrition, clothes, shelter, education, health, drinking water etc. and some other additional needs easily.
       Quality of life is affected by so many aspects like economy, socio-cultural, political, educational etc. as well as available resources, environment and development.
       It is multidimensional subject so affected by so many elements which are as follows:   



  1. Nutritious Food or Balanced Diet:
       To take a nutritious and balanced diet is very important and compulsory factor.
       It determines social, physical and mental health of family members.
       Lack of a balanced diet causes malnutrition and different types of diseases.
       The human life becomes painful.
       That’s why to get a quality life, consumption of nutritious food and a balanced diet is compulsory.
2. Family Size:
       Family size is the important factor for quality of life.
       It directly affects the other elements of quality of life.
       If family is small, then management of elements of quality of life such as clothes, education, health, shelter etc. can easily be done.
       All members spend happily life.
       If the family size is large, there is economic burden to fulfill basic and other additional needs.
       It hampers quality of life.
       That’s why there must be small family size to attain quality of life.
3. Health:
       It is said that, “Health is a Wealth.”
       So, health is considered as an element of quality of life.
       Healthy citizens and manpower are backbone for the development of a country.
       A nation must provide to citizens and parents must think about good health of their children.
       It is only possible when family size is small.
       Only being free from diseases is not only the criteria of health.
       Following factors must be fulfilled to get quality of life on the basis of health:
  1. Nutritious and balanced diet.
  2. Sufficient safe drinking water.
  3. Personal and community sanitation.
  4. Environmental sanitation and plantation.
  5. Regular health check up and timely treatment.
  6. First aid.
  7. Regular Exercise, Yoga, games and sports.
4. Sanitation:
       To attain quality of life our surrounding like house, water resources, garden, streets, school, temples, lakes etc. must be neat and clean without any pollution and waste thrown aside.
       Sanitation prevents the diseases and increases the longevity  of human beings and makes family members active.
       Healthy and active people participate in the developmental activities and contribute to the attainment of quality of life.
5. Education:
       Education is most precious wealth of the world.
       The family having educated, skilled and capable members, such family members can easily fulfill needs.
       Education makes life standard and with a quality by accessing to the modern services.
       Education supports to fulfill family needs, to become a successful person and income generation during this competitive age.

       Housing is basic need of human being.

       The size of houses also determines quality of life.
       If family size is big and house is small, then, there is scarcity of proper space. Many members have to adjust in a room, which decreases the amount of fresh oxygen, and chances of transferring of diseases.
       It causes unhealthy environment of house and leads to reduction in the quality of life.
       For quality of life, there must be sufficient space, separate kitchen, bedrooms, drawing room, store with proper ventilation and light.
10. Social and Cultural Values:
       The social, cultural and religious ethics affect directly on the quality of life.
       The superstitions situated in our society like chhaupadi pratha, deuki pratha, untouchability etc. impact negatively.
       Similarly, priority to the son for the cause of heaven reduces the self confidence of daughters.
       Dowry system, slavery system, use of wines, alcohols and unnecessary expenses in social gathering and festivals are reducing quality of life and creating adverse impacts on society.
       The society where there is no discrimination among children, no wrong practices, the quality of life is better there.

       It is not enough being physically healthy.
       To be healthy internal soul and heart,  a man  has to think beyond this physical world.
       Who am I, what I should do, what are my real duties…? Thinking of such questions really drives towards the spiritual world.

       Spiritual development improves such behaviors and a man becomes disciplined.
